Description
Created to celebrate the exhibition, Tattoo: Identity Through Ink, this image is adapted from "flash" art by Amund Dietzel (1891-1974). Dietzel was a Norwegian immigrant who was considered one of the best tattoo artists in America in the early twentieth century. Also known as the "Master in Milwaukee," Dietzel lived and worked for most of his life in that city.
Tattoo flash art, or simply flash, is a drawing, painting, or print of a generic tattoo that can be selected by a walk-in customer at a tattoo shop. Historically, most tattoo shops would feature hundreds of different flash designs on the wall that clients could choose from.
